FOIE GRAS- A GROWING CONCERN FOR ANIMAL WELFARE IN MAURITIUS?

MHP to end production of foie gras

MHP of Ukraine, regarded as amongst the top ten poultry production companies of the world, has announced that it will cease foie gras production in September 2019 as it is not consistent with the company’s strategies and policies concerning animal welfare, or those related to environment and sustainability.

Foie gras production, which has long been opposed by animal rights groups, has been banned in many European countries including the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, Norway, Poland, Turkey and the United Kingdom, as well as most provinces in Austria. Outside of Europe, it has been outlawed in India, Australia and Argentina. Predictably, other countries will follow.

Still considered as a delicacy in many countries including Mauritius, imports and exports of that rare and expensive commodity continue albeit at a low level.
